The video continued. Grandpa explained that nineteen years earlier, Dad’s business had collapsed and creditors were closing in. My parents told him they needed one weekend alone to fix things, then left me, four years old, on his porch with a small suitcase. Instead of coming back, they called a week later with an offer. Grandpa would pay off their debts, two hundred thousand dollars, and they would sign papers giving him permanent guardianship of me. Mr. Sterling lifted the notarized document from his folder and held it up for everyone to see. Both of their signatures were at the bottom.

Dad’s jaw tightened. “We were desperate,” he said. “We always meant to come back.” On the screen, Grandpa continued. “Every birthday, I kept the phone beside my bed. Every Christmas, I mailed you a photo of Hannah. Not one of you ever answered.” Mr. Sterling set a shoebox on the hallway table and opened it, revealing a stack of envelopes, every one stamped return to sender or never opened. Courtney had stopped halfway down the stairs, one hand over her mouth. “They told me you were sent to boarding school,” she whispered.

Mr. Sterling then read the final part of the will. Three years earlier, Grandpa had moved the house, the land, and his savings into a trust with me as the sole owner. My parents and Courtney each received one dollar and a letter. Because the guardianship papers were final, my parents had no legal claim as next of kin. Mr. Sterling handed Dad a trespass notice. The movers carried every box back out, and Dad was given twenty minutes to leave before the sheriff would be called.

Courtney was the last to leave. She stood in the doorway and apologized, saying she had believed every lie they told her. I did not forgive my parents that day, but I gave Courtney my number. That evening, I sat in Grandpa’s study and found one last letter in his drawer. It said I was never a burden, only the best promise he ever kept.
