Andrew’s answer was barely a whisper. Yes. His mother had told him to, and for the first time I watched him understand what thirty-four years of obeying her had cost. He set his coffee down and could not look at either of us. Margaret had known about the amendment all along. Edward had shown it to her the week he signed it. She had quietly let the old will go through probate and assumed nobody would ever find the newer pages.

Peter had only found the amendment because Margaret’s attorney requested the old estate files last month. She was drafting a waiver for me to sign once I was out of the house, giving up every claim I had to the property. Edward, Peter explained, had seen how Margaret treated people she considered outsiders. He had written that clause to protect whoever his son married.

Legally, the entire $3.4 million house was now mine. Margaret begged. Andrew cried. I let them both finish. Then I told Peter I wanted Margaret’s right to live there restored, exactly as Edward intended, because I was not going to become the person she had been to me. Peter drew up the papers that afternoon. But the house would be run by my rules now, and her name would never again be the one at the top of the deed.

Andrew moved into an apartment across town and started therapy. Six months later, he asked if we could try again, and I told him I would think about it once he had learned to speak for himself. Margaret still lives in the east wing. She asks before she rearranges anything in my kitchen. The Whitmore name is still on the gate, but the keys are mine. And on Sundays, I set the table with the antique dinnerware, because it belongs to me now too.
