Two deputies stepped inside, followed by a woman named Gloria Tran from the title company. She explained everything in a flat, professional voice. Jonathan had paid a notary to forge my signature on a power of attorney, then sold the house to a developer named Victor Hale for one point six million dollars, less than half its value, because he wanted a fast closing while I was in the hospital. But when Gloria’s team searched the county records, they found my deed to the Navarros, recorded almost a month earlier. The house Jonathan sold had not been mine for weeks, and it had never been his.

Marjorie insisted they had meant no harm, but Gloria laid out the notary’s confession and the texts Marjorie had sent coaching Jonathan on what to say. The one hundred sixty thousand dollar deposit Victor Hale had wired was frozen, and Hale himself had agreed to testify. When a deputy read Jonathan his rights, he turned to me, shaking. “You knew. You let me do it.” “You planned to leave me on the street with a newborn,” I said. “I just made sure you had nothing to take.” They cuffed both of them in the same kitchen where Marjorie had told me to be grateful for a cheap room.

Everything I had done, I had done quietly. The sale to the Navarros included a ninety-day occupancy agreement, so I could recover after the birth without anyone knowing. The four million dollars sat in accounts under my name alone, and I had already bought a bright three-bedroom house outside Cincinnati, ten minutes from my closest friend, Imani. Diane had filed for divorce the afternoon before, citing fraud.

Jonathan pleaded guilty to forgery and attempted fraud and received three years, and Marjorie paid heavy restitution. The judge gave me full custody of Willow. I kept the three hundred dollars he had left on the table and opened a savings account in my daughter’s name, so her first deposit would be the price of the lesson he taught me.
