Ms. Whitaker spoke calmly while the guards stayed beside the gate. Four months earlier, Natalie had asked me to sign what she called a routine property form while I was still grieving. It was really a limited power of attorney. Natalie never owned the villa, yet she used that paper to promise it to Marcus’s parents, taking ninety thousand dollars as a first payment and writing a fake sales agreement. Marcus’s mother gasped, and his father flipped through the folder until he found the agreement with Natalie’s signature on it.

I stepped out from behind the stone pillar and explained how I knew. A neighbor had seen Natalie leading strangers through the villa weeks earlier, so I began recording our calls. Ms. Whitaker then revoked the power of attorney, moved the villa into a trust that no one could sell or borrow against, and had every lock and gate code changed. The brass key in the box was a useless copy of the one Natalie had been carrying. The folder also held a notice banning trespass and a demand for Natalie to return the ninety thousand dollars.

Marcus’s father turned to his son, who admitted he knew about the payment but believed I had agreed. His mother wept as the family loaded boxes back into their cars. Natalie begged me to listen. She said Marcus’s family had pressured her, and that she had already spent half the money on credit card debt. I told her I would not press charges, but only if she repaid every dollar through a written plan arranged by Ms. Whitaker, and she signed it on the hood of her car.

Natalie repaid Marcus’s parents in installments over the next year, selling her car to finish early. In the spring, I invited her to lunch at the villa, with one new rule: nobody stays overnight without my permission. The fog lifted off the lake as we ate, and afterward I straightened the Canadian flag beside the porch, exactly the way my husband used to.
