Ruth held the paper toward the mourners gathering by the cars. “This is a deed for the family farm, signed by Thomas eight years ago,” she announced. “It was always meant to be mine, and you have no right to it.” Mr. Whitfield took the paper gently and studied the bottom corner. “Mrs. Calloway, the notary who stamped this died a full year before the date written here,” he said quietly. Ruth’s hand began to tremble, and the color left her lips.

Mr. Whitfield turned the brass key in a hidden lock inside the Bible’s back cover, and a small compartment opened. Inside lay a flash drive and a short note in Thomas’s messy handwriting. He had discovered the forgery two years earlier in the county records, but he never confronted his mother. Instead, he spent months quietly gathering proof. The drive held bank statements showing Ruth draining his late father’s accounts, and a recorded phone call in which she bragged about faking the deed and planning to humiliate me at the funeral.

Gloria began to cry again. She told us Ruth had claimed it was Thomas’s dying wish to see her at the service, and she had believed it until the recording played. She pulled an envelope of twelve thousand dollars from her purse and pressed it into Mr. Whitfield’s hands. Russell walked over with his head down and admitted he had suspected the forgery for years but never found the courage to speak. He handed me a folder of old statements and promised to testify beside Gloria.

Ruth had no more words. Within a month, the attorney filed the recording and the statements, and the court voided the deed. Ruth repaid every dollar she had taken and moved into a small apartment across town. Six months later, she mailed me a short apology, and I answered with one line: I will never stop you from visiting his grave. The farm stayed mine. I keep Thomas’s Bible on the kitchen shelf, gas receipts still tucked inside, and every spring I plant tomatoes where he used to park his truck.
