The signature looked almost like mine, but not quite. I sign with a slanted J, and this one stood straight up. More importantly, my office badge records showed I had been in a client meeting across town at 4:15, the exact time the notary stamp said I was standing in front of her. The notary turned out to be Sabrina’s maid of honor. She had stamped it without ever meeting me.

Gloria flagged the filing as fraudulent, and my attorney had it voided within two weeks. When detectives questioned Sabrina, she admitted everything. Her fiancé, Grant, had insisted on a prenup listing their assets. Sabrina had told him she owned a paid-off house. She panicked when his lawyer asked for the deed, so she tried to make the lie true. Grant called off the wedding the day he read the police report.

Dad came to my apartment alone a week later. He didn’t ask me to stop the eviction. He handed me a check for four hundred dollars, his first paycheck from a part-time job at the hardware store, and said it was the first payment on four years he owed me. I took the check. Not for the money, but because he needed me to. Then he cried and apologized for letting me carry them in silence. Mom came the following Sunday. Her apology was smaller, but it was real.

I didn’t evict my parents. Instead, I gave them a real lease, at a rent they could actually afford, with every payment recorded in their own names. Dad mows the lawn every Saturday like it’s a promise. Sabrina took a plea deal, two years of probation and community service. She no longer comes to Sunday dinner. And in September, at thirty-two, I finally started the graduate program I had postponed four times. Nobody at my parents’ table has compared me to anyone since.
