Brian read the balance twice, and the anger drained out of his face. Fifty-six thousand dollars. He sank into a chair and finally told the truth. Before the flood, he had borrowed against the house to join a friend’s business, and the friend vanished with the money. The mortgage had been behind for months, and he had hidden every letter. The rent was his idea. The basement rule was Hannah’s, because she had found black mold along the back wall and could not afford to fix it.

I told them how it began. The insurance company had paid me thirty-eight thousand dollars for the house. The week I moved in, I saw the dark circles under Hannah’s eyes and knew she would never accept help she had not earned. So I opened an account in her name and deposited the check. Then I signed her agreement, paid the rent from my pension, and every second of the month I rode the bus downtown and put the same seven hundred fifty dollars back in. Twenty-four deposits. She was right that nothing is free. I just made sure it all came home.

Hannah cried so hard she had to grip the table. She admitted every rent envelope had gone straight to the mortgage, and she had hated herself each time. She tore the rental agreement in half, then in half again. Brian apologized to me with a shaking voice, and I believed him. From the top of the stairs, a small voice asked, “Grandma isn’t leaving, right?” Emma had heard everything.

The next morning, Brian paid the fourteen thousand dollars owed to the bank. The rest of the money hired a crew to remove the mold, and he took a warehouse job while he searched for something better. By June, my basement room smelled of fresh paint, and Emma carried her own bookshelf down the stairs. Hannah and I still sit at that kitchen table, but now she pours the coffee. I never asked for the rent back. Some debts are not meant to be paid in cash.
