The monitor was only reacting to my voice, because I had whispered “Mom” without meaning to. A nurse calmed the machines, and Grandma sank into the chair beside the bed and finally told me everything. Twenty-nine years ago, my mother suffered a brain bleed while giving birth to me and never woke up. Grandpa could not bear the thought of me growing up beside a hospital bed, so he made Grandma promise to say that Mom had died.

“I kept that promise for twenty-nine years, and I have hated myself for it,” Grandma said. “But I never abandoned her.” Every Wednesday while I was at school, she came here and read aloud. When the hospital wanted to move my mother to a cheaper ward in the basement, Grandma sold her wedding jewelry to pay for Room 214. She also paid for the little window, so that if my mother ever opened her eyes, the first thing she saw would be a garden instead of a wall.

Dr. Hayes explained the rest. Grandpa had set up a trust to pay for the room, and only his name was listed as the family contact. When he died last winter, the hospital removed everyone else without checking. The trust ran dry in the spring, so a new administrator arranged a transfer to a state facility, never knowing the old record was wrong. The envelope in Grandma’s hands held my mother’s guardianship papers, naming Grandma as her legal guardian. When the administrator saw them, he tore up the transfer order in front of us.

Then Dr. Hayes added something that weakened my knees. For three weeks, my mother’s fingers had twitched whenever Grandma read to her, and they had waited for the right moment to tell us. I took her hand and talked until my throat hurt. At dusk, her fingers closed around mine. Months later, she opened her eyes and turned toward the window. Today, she is learning to walk again, and Grandma sits beside her every day.
