After our son was born, I wanted a paternity test. My wife smirked and asked what I would do if he was not mine. I said divorce. I would not raise another man’s child. The result came back excluding me. I filed within the month, signed away any claim, and did not hold the baby again. She did not fight the papers. She only said I would regret the speed.

Three years later a hospital in another city called about a boy who needed a platelet donor and had my name in an old file from the birth. I almost hung up. The coordinator said a routine retest for the transfusion had flagged the original lab report as inconsistent, and the corrected result was already in the chart. I was the father. The first sample had been mislabeled. The lab had settled two similar cases that same quarter.

I drove to the address on the form. He was three, sitting on a kitchen floor with a plastic truck, and he had my mother’s eyes. My ex-wife did not look surprised. She said the smirk had been fear, not confession. She had known the dates. She had also known I would leave at the first piece of paper that let me. The medical match went through. The corrected report is in a folder on my desk.

He calls me by my first name. We are building something slower than the divorce was. The horror was not the phone call. It was the three years I had already spent proving I meant what I said in that hospital room.
