Gerald didn’t run. He lowered the bag to the floor and unzipped it, and the officers’ hands dropped to their holsters. Inside were a power drill, a small listening device, and a stack of empty envelopes. He had planned to crack the hidden wall safe behind my bookshelf while the hallway was in chaos, then slip out with the movers. Vanessa had promised him a quarter of my savings. “The safe is empty, Gerald,” I said. “Daniel and I moved everything yesterday morning.”

I had suspected someone was helping them since the third week. The smart lock on my door showed entries at two in the afternoon while I was at physical therapy, and only the building’s master code could open it that way. Instead of confronting anyone, I asked Daniel to file a complaint and let the police record the hallway. Gerald had started the whispers among the neighbors about my memory. He had been reading my mail and telling Vanessa when I slept, when I left, and which pills I took.

Gerald’s shoulders sagged. He admitted he had lost his savings on bad bets, and Vanessa had found out and offered him a way out. At the station, Vanessa learned Gerald was talking and immediately did the same, blaming him for everything, hoping for a lighter sentence. It didn’t work. Between the forged evaluation, the false court filing, and the recordings, prosecutors had more than enough, and the doctor who signed the fake report surrendered his license.

By noon a locksmith had replaced every lock, and the building board had erased the master code and removed Gerald from his post. Neighbors who had doubted me came by with apologies and soup. I didn’t hate Vanessa. I mostly felt tired, and sad that my own sister had looked at my grief and seen a price tag. That evening I sat by the window with my late husband’s photo and watched the harbor lights come on. The condo was quiet again, and for the first time in months, it felt entirely mine.
