The folder held proof that six months earlier, while Adrian “helped” me with a bank form, he had slipped in a second page. It created an eighty thousand dollar loan against my house, signed with a forgery of my name. I found out when a letter arrived about a payment I never made. Instead of confronting him, I quietly hired a lawyer named Dorothy Reyes and began collecting every statement, signature, and date.

On Thursday, when he asked for my pension, I understood he wanted the last piece he did not yet own. So I agreed and said nothing. The house had been sold three weeks earlier, and I was allowed to stay until Monday. That morning, women from my church and two movers cleared every room while I waited at the table. The sale paid off the forged loan, and the rest went into an account in my name alone. His hands would never touch my pension.

Adrian shouted that I had humiliated him, then begged, then sank onto the bare floor. Vanessa admitted she had known about the loan and had spent part of it on her boutique. I told them calmly that I had not done this to punish them. I did it because I could no longer live in a house my own son could enter with a key and take from me. Then I held out my hand, and he placed the key in it. I told him the police report would be burned the day he repaid every cent in writing.

I now live in a small apartment across the river. For a month Adrian did not call. Then a check arrived with a note that read, “I am sorry, Mom. I am trying.” Another has come every month since. Last Sunday he sat across from me at a diner, asked how I was, and listened to the whole answer. Friday dinners belong to me now, and I cook only when I choose. I gave him everything once. This time, I kept something for myself, and he is earning his way back.
