I woke at three to seventeen missed calls and one text. Dad, help. Come fast. I drove to her house with the hazards on and my hands tight on the wheel. The porch light was off. She opened the door in a robe, half asleep, and the fiancé stood behind her looking more annoyed than worried. She said she had never texted me. Her phone was on the charger in the bedroom. The call log on her screen was empty.

I stood in the driveway longer than I should have. The numbers on my phone were hers. The wording was hers. None of it had come from the woman in the doorway. As I pulled away, another message arrived from the same contact. It said: Do not go back inside. He has her phone in the drawer. I am at the neighbor’s.

I turned around. She was not in the house when I knocked the second time. The fiancé said she had gone back to bed. A light was on two doors down. My daughter was on the neighbor’s couch with a split lip and her real phone in her hand, the one he did not know she kept for work. He had used the old phone, the one still on the family plan, to pull me across town while he packed a bag and tried to make her leave with him. The seventeen calls were the lock screen she could not reach.

Police took the statement in the neighbor’s kitchen. He was gone by the time they reached the house. She came home with me that night, and the old phone stayed in an evidence bag. The text that froze me was the only one that had actually been from her.
