The man in the driveway was Henry Collins, his overcoat wrinkled and his face pale. He told us he had overheard Richard’s security chief on the phone, ordering a crew to burn the Lake Geneva boathouse before sunrise. “Your mother knew he would try this,” Henry said. “That is why she made me wait until he humiliated you in public. Only then would he panic and move.” We left at once, Chloe clutching the brass key in her lap while Henry’s headlights followed us through the dark.

We reached the boathouse an hour ahead of the crew. Beneath the floor cabinet, the key opened a steel box holding a ledger, a stack of cassette tapes, and a sworn statement from Margaret’s private nurse. Together they proved that Richard had secretly swapped his wife’s medicine for weaker pills, hoping she would die before she could change her will. Margaret had discovered the scheme months earlier and quietly rewrote everything, naming me her only heir. She knew she was running out of time, so she trusted Henry to guard the evidence until Richard exposed himself.

Dawn had barely broken when a black truck rolled up the gravel road. Henry had already called the state police, and two cruisers blocked the drive. The security chief surrendered his gasoline cans without a fight and named Richard as the man who gave the order. By noon, the nurse’s statement and the tapes were in the hands of federal prosecutors. Richard was arrested at a rented hotel suite, still insisting he had done nothing wrong, until the recordings played in court.

Richard pleaded guilty to fraud and manslaughter and spent the rest of his life in prison. Gregory and Stephen had known nothing, and they came to my door ashamed, so I gave them jobs, not fortunes. I sold the yacht, built a literature scholarship in Margaret’s name, and kept the boathouse. Every autumn, Chloe and I sit on its dock and read my mother’s letter aloud.
