Maestro Brooks arrived with the loaner, a plain student violin with a sticky A string. I tuned it in ninety seconds and walked onstage still shaking. I didn’t play Sibelius for the critics or the donors. I played it for Grandpa, and for once I didn’t rush. When the last note ended, the hall stood. Afterward, the director of the Boston Conservatory found me in the wings and offered me a private audition.

Brianna was waiting backstage in my green dress, mascara running. She had been offered a paralegal position at a downtown law firm, the first real job she’d ever been proud of. A criminal mischief charge for destroying a $95,000 instrument would end it before it started. She begged me, sobbing, to save her future. Mom stood behind her and said a good sister would tell the insurance company it was an accident.

For the first time in my life, I said no and meant it all the way down. I gave the police the truth and let the footage speak. But when the detective asked whether I wanted the case prosecuted, I agreed to a restitution agreement instead. Brianna would pay the $2,500 insurance deductible, repay the $1,400 she had borrowed from me over the years, and return my dress dry-cleaned. If she finished paying within a year, the charge would be dismissed. Her future was in her own hands now, not mine.

The insurance company paid a luthier in Cremona to rebuild Grandpa’s violin from every piece I had saved. It took eight months. He kept the tiny scratch near the chin rest, exactly as Grandpa wanted. Brianna made her last payment in month eleven and kept her job. Mom never called me selfish again. And when I walked into my conservatory audition that spring, I carried Grandpa’s violin, whole again, still showing the marks of its life.
