My son, Theo, was born on that blanket beneath a violet sky, with Walt’s rough, steady hands guiding him out and his voice never wavering. Theo was silent for three terrible seconds, then he cried, and I sobbed right along with him. The ambulance arrived minutes later, but my bleeding would not stop, so the paramedics raced us to the hospital. Theo went to the neonatal unit for observation, and I was taken to intensive care.

While doctors worked on me, Walt did what no one in my husband’s family ever would. He drove back to the ranch gate and pulled the footage from the security camera mounted on the last mailbox. It showed Marcus dragging me from the passenger seat and speeding away while I stood doubled over in the dust. Then Walt phoned my uncle, Judge Raymond Calloway, who had already heard the voicemail and was driving through the night.

Uncle Raymond reached the hospital before midnight, and I told him everything, including the accusation about the bracelet. He called the caterer, who admitted her staff had installed cameras in the upstairs hallway for security. The footage showed Camille leaving the guest bathroom, slipping the eighteen-thousand-dollar bracelet into her own clutch, and smiling at her reflection. She had hidden it to frame the pregnant nurse she resented, and she needed only her brother’s temper to finish the job. Within the hour, Raymond had a warrant signed.

When Marcus pulled into his driveway, the deputies were waiting, and the rest unfolded exactly as you saw. The bracelet turned up in Camille’s jewelry box, and she was arrested for filing a false report. Marcus was charged with abandoning a woman in labor and endangering his child. Eleanor lost her friends, her charity boards, and her perfect brunches. Days later, when the doctors let me hold Theo, Walt was still sitting in the waiting room, refusing to leave. He was not family by blood, but he stayed. I gave my son the middle name Walter, and for the first time in years, I felt safe.
