I took the folder from Brianna’s shaking hands and showed the older officer the recorded deed. He read it carefully, then looked past me at the sectional wedged in my doorway. “Ma’am, is anyone here authorized to be in this home besides you?” “No,” I said. “They are my family, and they moved in without asking me.” Brianna started to argue, but the officer raised a hand. “The deed is clear. Nobody is being arrested today, but everyone needs to take their belongings out before the end of the afternoon.”

The room stayed silent until Mom finally spoke. She admitted that my moving confirmation had landed on her phone because I once listed her as an emergency contact, and Brianna had read it over her shoulder. My parents had only offered to help with a deposit on a nearby rental, but when Brianna got excited about a house, nobody corrected her. Dad said he knew by Wednesday and stayed quiet because he did not know how to take it back. Derek whispered that he never asked whose name was on anything, because he did not want to hear the answer.

I was angry, but I was not cruel. I told them the movers could take everything to a storage unit that I would pay for during the next two months, so the children would never feel the consequences of adult mistakes. I also handed Derek a list of three rentals near my office that I had already checked. I offered to cover the first month’s rent as a loan with a written agreement, nothing more and nothing less. Brianna refused to speak to me, yet she still let the movers carry her wedding photos back to the truck.

By sunset, the sectional was gone, the boxes were gone, and the house felt like mine. Dad stayed behind to apologize for the first time in my life, and I let him carry out the last lamp. Later, Derek signed the loan papers, and I hosted my Sunday dinner in the blue-tiled kitchen, with every guest invited on purpose.
