The letter began, “Son, if you are reading this, then the doctors were right and I ran out of time.” Dad wrote that a heart condition was discovered the same month I turned nineteen. The doctor warned him it could fail without notice, and he could not make himself tell me. He admitted that after Mom died, he was terrified of loving me the wrong way, so he said almost nothing, and he hated himself for it every single day.

“The rent was never about money,” he wrote. “You would have refused any handout, so I let you earn your independence, and I saved every dollar for the day you truly needed it.” I counted the envelopes through my tears. Sixty of them, twenty-four thousand dollars in total, untouched. He had even bought the boots the week he saw me gluing my work shoes back together, but he wrote that he sat in his truck for an hour and never found the courage to walk inside and hand them over.

Walter finally explained the rest. The beer Dad carried home was never for himself, since his doctor had forbidden it, and he handed every case to Walter. The fishing gear was bought for the weekend he hoped to invite me, a weekend he never found the nerve to ask for. With shaking hands, I unwrapped the blue towel and found two fishing rods, one small and scratched. “Your mother bought that one when you were five,” Walter said softly. “Your dad kept it safe all these years.”

The letter ended with one last line: “Use the money for a home of your own, wear the boots, and forgive a scared man who loved you more than he knew how to say.” I put the boots on at the kitchen table. They fit perfectly. A few months later, I used the savings as a down payment on a small house, and every Saturday since, Walter and I have gone fishing at the lake, with Mom’s little rod in my hands and Dad’s old work boots by my door.
