The check arrived in a black leather folder after the last candle had burned down, and Gerald slid it across the tablecloth as if passing the salt. $4,380. “You can cover it with your retirement money,” he announced, loud enough for the far end of the table. When I said no, quietly, he chuckled and repeated that a wife shouldn’t hide money from her husband. Twenty-four faces turned toward me. I understood he had planned this part too. He was certain I would pay rather than embarrass him, the way I had paid for forty-four years in smaller currencies.

I thought of every grocery receipt I had explained line by line, the golf clubs, the sofa that stayed. I did not raise my voice. “Gerald, I am not hiding anything. It was never yours to spend.” I asked the server for the folder, placed it in front of the birthday man, and thanked everyone for coming. Then I told the room, pleasantly, that on Sunday I was flying to Vancouver for three weeks to see my sister, on a ticket I had bought myself that morning. Nobody laughed. Someone’s fork touched a plate and the sound carried.

Our eldest stood first, asked the server to separate her family’s portion, and paid it without a word. Her brother followed, then Gerald’s brother and his wife, then the golfers, one by one, mumbling their embarrassment toward the tablecloth. Gerald sat with the remaining total and a face that cycled through three colors. He paid it with his own card, wine included. Nobody gloated, and nobody needed to. For the first time in our marriage, I watched my husband run out of things to say.

Colleen was waiting at the arrivals gate, grayer than I remembered and laughing before I reached her. We walked the island coast in the rain, and I bought a blue scarf without checking the price. Gerald called every Sunday, and for the first time he asked questions instead of giving instructions. When I came home, we replaced the old sofa, and I chose it. I kept the unpaid page of that menu in a drawer, not as proof of anything, only as a reminder that a milestone birthday can also mark the evening a woman finally spends something on herself.
