I broke the seal with hands that would not stay still. Inside were a single page and a small brass key. “Caleb,” Walter had written, “you kept my secret, so here is the rest. Your father believes a boy is worth only what can be spent on him. I spent thirteen years watching you prove otherwise. Everything I built goes to you, with one request: keep the crew employed, and keep the door open.” Gerald’s chair scraped back. Diane said the word “manipulated” twice, and Stanley answered calmly that Walter had recorded every conversation with his doctors, his bank, and his son.

Stanley read the rest. Hannah and my parents would each receive fifteen thousand dollars and the family photograph albums. Gerald stared at the figure as if it had insulted him. I thought of the three hundred dollars he once slid across the counter, folded once, the price he had put on a son. I did not feel victory. I felt the weight of thirteen years: the pill organizer filled every Sunday, the baseball games played with the volume low, the stairs Walter climbed one at a time while I pretended not to count.

Outside, Hannah found me beside my truck. She was still the girl crying on the stairs. “I should have followed you that morning,” she whispered. I told her the door was open and had always been. Gerald came last, alone, his sunglasses in his hand. “I did not know he was sick,” he said. “You didn’t ask,” I answered, without heat. He nodded slowly, and for the first time, he did not reach for a rebuttal.

That evening I used the key on the bottom drawer of Walter’s desk. Inside lay three crisp hundred-dollar bills, the same ones I had pressed into his hand on my first night as rent. Beneath them was a note: “Rent paid in full. Welcome home.” He had kept them untouched for twenty-two years. I sat in his chair and let the quiet settle. The crew still works. Hannah comes on Sundays, and Gerald’s number is saved in my phone. On the radio, the game plays low, and I no longer count the stairs.
