Kenzie asked him if he knew whose wrenches those were.

She had been at that workbench for an hour, handling each socket the way Emmett had taught her two summers before he died, matching sizes, replacing them in order. She was ten and she knew where every tool belonged. She looked at Warren and asked him plainly whether he knew whose they were, the way children ask things when they already know the answer and are waiting to see if the adult will tell the truth.

Warren said yes, they were Emmett’s.

Kenzie said she knew, because Bertram and Joel had cleaned them and oiled them and laid them out on a towel so they wouldn’t rust, and she wanted to know if Uncle Warren had ever done that.

Warren did not answer her. He looked at the chalk line and the combines and the tools on the towel and then he looked at me, and I did not help him with the silence. That was his to sit in.

He moved the wagon in November. Called ahead, brought his own tractor, had it out in an afternoon. He did not move the boats or the camper, and I did not ask him to. The chalk line held. We have had Sunday dinners since, not easy ones but honest ones, and Kenzie sits at the table and talks about the tools the way she talks about things she intends to keep knowing.

Bertram and Joel left in April as agreed. The morning they pulled out, Bertram came to the door and handed me an envelope. Inside was a check for the last month’s rent, which I was expecting, and a separate folded paper, which I was not.

It was a handwritten list of every repair the shed needed. Roof seam over the north door. Two cracked footings along the east wall. A roller on the south door that catches in cold weather. Emmett had known about all of them. I had known about most of them. But seeing them written down in someone else’s careful handwriting, by a man who had no obligation to notice anything beyond his lease, undid me in the driveway in a way I had not expected.

I told Bertram I appreciated it. He said Emmett had built a good shed and it deserved to stay that way. Then he drove north toward Onida and I stood in the lane for a while before going inside.

My car has been in the south end since November. No hail this winter. The body shop repair held. The deductible still stings but less than sitting out did.

The tools are on the workbench where Kenzie arranged them. I have not moved a single one.
