The legal process moved slower than anger and faster than grief. Preston’s lawyer called twice, then stopped, because the photograph from room number 6, the open ring box, and Julian’s recordings left very little to argue. The night the papers were signed, I stood in my kitchen with a pan of butter and garlic going cold on the stove, the dinner I had meant to cook for him two birthdays ago. I realized I was not crying for the man. I was mourning the version of myself who had kept making excuses for a text message.

Julian came by a week later, wearing his brace again, and this time I understood why. He had worn it for so long that his body had forgotten how to stand without a performance. He told me he had spent months lying in that hospital bed listening to two people he loved plan around his death, and that the night he stood in my foyer he had felt more frightened of himself than of them. I told him the truth: I had been about to follow him into something we could never take back. We sat with that for a long while, two cousins who had nearly traded our lives for a verdict.

Bianca left the county. Preston sent a long letter that asked forgiveness in one paragraph and money in the next, and I answered neither. I kept the empty bottle of pale red wine on a shelf above the sink, not as a trophy, but as proof that I had ordered dinner, tried to be gentle with myself, and been seen by a stranger who risked a whisper. I mailed a card to the restaurant for the waiter. He wrote back that he had almost said nothing, and that he was glad he hadn’t.

On my next birthday, I worked my shift, checked a child’s eyes in the soft morning light, and drove home with groceries I actually wanted. Julian arrived at six without calling, carrying a small cake and standing without the brace. We cooked together, butter, garlic, and easy silence, and the quiet no longer felt like waiting for a text. When he raised his glass, he said only, “To the people who stay.” I did not answer, but I held it, and for the first time in years, I was not alone at my own table.
