Dad found boundary markers. Old ones, iron pins driven into the ground in 1962, two of them fully encased in the pool’s concrete foundation when it was built in 1987. The pool had been constructed eighteen inches over the original property line, which meant a portion of it sat on land that had never legally belonged to the house’s owners, including Aldric.

The elderly woman’s name was Loretta. Her father had owned the adjacent parcel, and when he died he left it to her. The parcel had been landlocked for decades and Loretta had never developed it, but she had also never sold it or signed any easement, and the encroachment had simply been ignored by three successive owners who either did not know or did not want to know. Loretta had known for thirty years. She had filed one complaint in 1994 that went nowhere. When my father called her, she drove four hours with a folder she had been keeping since before I was born.

The police were there because Dad had filed a report the previous evening documenting the encroachment and requesting a property line inspection, which is a civil matter, but the responding officers also found that Aldric had no permits for the original pool construction, which opened a separate building code issue that the county was interested in.

Aldric paid the $8,400 within forty-eight hours. His attorney called my father’s phone, not mine. Coralie did not call at all.

Here is why Dad never told me what he had found during those nine days. He said he was not certain the boundary markers were what he thought they were until the third day, and once he was certain he did not want me carrying the information at work, where my face would have given something away. He knew Coralie would threaten my job. He had prepared for it. He wanted me to be genuinely surprised, because genuine surprise is the only kind that holds up under pressure, and he had spent thirty years learning that the person who stays calm while the other person threatens them is always the person who already knows how the morning is going to go.

I no longer work for Aldric. I gave my notice the week after the pool. Not because he fired me, but because I had watched my father stand beside a pool he had made perfect and be told by the person who owed him money that my job was the price of their debt, and I decided I did not want to work somewhere my livelihood was used as leverage against my family.

Dad never mentioned it again after that morning. He is not a man who revisits things once they are settled. He fixed the pool. He collected what he was owed. He called Loretta and told her what he had found and let her do what she had been waiting thirty years to do.

He charged her nothing for the call.
