I set the phone on the bare kitchen counter, where the entry table used to stand, and let the speaker carry my mother’s voice into the empty room. Marlene sounded thin and hurried, nothing like her cheerful email. She said the cards were declined, the resort in Nassau wanted a deposit, and Kayla was crying in the lobby. She told me to call the bank and explain that it was all a misunderstanding. I asked, evenly, what exactly I should say it was. She hesitated, then said I had signed the papers myself and had agreed. Priya stayed silent on the other line, and the call recorded every word.

When my mother finally hung up, Priya told me what the file held. The signature on the power of attorney was mine only in shape. It had been traced from the back of an old birthday card, the ink pressed too evenly. The notary stamp belonged to Mr. Alvarez, my late father’s oldest friend, who had passed away two years earlier. Someone had found his seal in a drawer of my father’s old papers, the same papers my mother had insisted on keeping after the funeral. I stood in the hollow kitchen and felt grief arrive quietly, for him and for everything she had been willing to borrow from the dead.

The officer took the folder, the sticky note, and the recording. Two days later, Marlene and Kayla were met at the gate when they flew home, stranded and sunburned, with nothing but carry-ons. Most of what they had taken was found in a storage unit rented in my mother’s name. The crystal glasses were still wrapped in towels, unbroken. Kayla gave her statement the same afternoon, tearfully, and said she had believed it was only a loan. I did not argue with her, though I noticed she never said she had asked.

The court sorted out the rest slowly. Kayla accepted a lesser plea and community service. Marlene was ordered to make restitution and was barred from my accounts for good. I kept the sticky note in the black folder, not out of bitterness, but because it was the only honest thing she had written to me in years. I changed the locks, hung my father’s glasses on a new shelf, and turned the porch light on each evening. My mother had wished me alone and broke. I was alone, and I was not broke, and I discovered that quiet could be a kind of safety.
