Harold’s smile held for exactly three seconds. I told him, in the same voice I use to order dinner, that I would not be signing anything and that Loretta at the pension office had confirmed it. He said I was being dramatic, then stubborn, then ungrateful, in that order, as though he were reading from a list. I slid my phone across the table instead. Tiffany’s message sat on the screen, every word of it, including the cabin and the line about me having nowhere else to go. He read it twice. The pen stopped tapping. For the first time in forty-four years, my husband had nothing prepared to say.

That afternoon I called a lawyer, a calm woman named Ms. Okafor, and I brought the shoeboxes. Every receipt, every statement, every year Harold had sworn he never understood. She laughed kindly and said I had kept better records than most firms. The survivor annuity stayed in place, and so did my share of the house. I thought about the dust warming on the baseboard heater, the casseroles, the coupons, and how long I had mistaken being useful for being loved. Nobody had called me smart in decades. I did not need anyone to, but it felt good to hear it.

Harold moved into the cabin, alone, because Tiffany found it less charming without the lump sum. Dennis, who had watched the whole scene at the restaurant, drove over one evening and said quietly that he was sorry he had said nothing. I thanked him and meant it. Harold called in the spring, older and smaller, and asked if we could talk. He apologized without excuses, and I listened without rescuing him. I met him at the same restaurant, at a table of my choosing, and ordered chicken and dumplings, and this time I ate it while it was still steaming.

The divorce finished in June, fair and unhurried. I kept the tin of peppermints, the shoeboxes, and the house. I took a bookkeeping course at the community college and started doing taxes for neighbors, who paid me and said thank you. I hung a sign by the door with my name on it. Some evenings I sit at the kitchen table with a cup of tea that stays hot, and the quiet in the house feels like mine. For forty-four years, I took what was left. Now I decide what stays.
