I called my sister before Desmond woke up. She drove two hours and was at the door by seven. We took three bags, Wren’s stuffed rabbit, and the folder of documents I had been quietly assembling for six weeks, because some decisions feel sudden and are actually very long in the making.

Desmond did not notice we were gone until almost noon. He texted asking where I had taken Wren. I did not answer that day. My attorney answered for me the following week.

Here is what I want to say about Callum, because the story does not work without him. He was not the villain. He was a thirteen-year-old boy whose father had never once told him his behavior was wrong, and whose mother had been quietly welcomed back into the family structure while the actual wife was removed from a group chat each time someone was displeased. He learned exactly what he was taught. I hope someone teaches him differently now. I genuinely do.

Desmond asked, through his attorney, for a reconciliation conversation. I had one. I asked him one question: in five years, had he ever removed his ex-wife from the group chat. He said no, because that would have caused problems with Callum. I asked him how many times he had removed me. He said he didn’t remember the exact number. I said I did, and that the answer to his reconciliation question was no.

The divorce took eight months. Wren has her own bedroom now with a yellow door she chose herself. Last month I made chicken for dinner and put a full plate in front of her and she looked at it for a second with the careful look of a child who has learned to check whether something is really hers. Then she picked up the drumstick with both hands and ate the whole thing without looking at anyone else’s plate.

She did not apologize once.

That was the moment I knew we were going to be fine.
