The phone call was to the Treasury Department’s savings bond verification line, which is a real number that processes redemption holds on bonds with joint ownership disputes. Mrs. Alderton had seen this situation before, not often, but enough to know the correct steps. What she needed to confirm was that the bonds were valid, that my name on them was legally binding as a joint payee, and that no prior redemption attempt had been filed.

No one had tried to redeem them. Garrett and Rosalind had known about the bonds long enough for Rosalind to write that sticky note, and they had done nothing with them, which told me they were waiting for the estate to clear so the bonds could be absorbed quietly into the general distribution, where my $300 clearance fee would have been my only share.

Mrs. Alderton confirmed that as joint payee I had full legal right to redeem. The total value across all seventeen bonds, with accumulated interest across thirty-seven years, came to a number I will not post here except to say it was enough to pay off my car, cover two semesters of my older son’s community college, and still leave a remainder I put in a savings account that first time in my adult life I have had one.

I did not call Garrett or Rosalind afterward. My brother Weston called me, having heard from Garrett, and said he hoped I understood this would cause family problems. I told him I understood that Rosalind had written a note asking how to exclude me if the bonds went unclaimed, and that I considered that the family problem, and that I had simply solved a different one.

Here is the part that stayed with me longest. In the bottom of the same box where I found the envelope, under the extension cords, was a folded piece of notepaper in Grandpa Everett’s handwriting. Not a letter. Just a list of dates and amounts, every bond he had purchased, with a note beside each one. The note beside the 1984 bonds said: for when Margot needs it. The one beside 1991 said: she will find it when she needs to.

He knew I would be the one clearing the basement. He knew because I was always the one who showed up. He hid the envelope somewhere a person would only find it by actually working, by getting down on the floor and going through the boxes, and he trusted that I was the person who would do that.

Garrett wanted me to burn it. Grandpa spent seven years building it. Some people know exactly who you are, and some of them leave you proof in the walls.
