Her name was Delphine. She had found the cover-up at a thrift shop four years after Wren disappeared, six hundred miles from that beach, in a bin of donated summer clothing, and she had worn it for five years without knowing what it carried. She had noticed the embroidered initials inside the hem and assumed they stood for someone ordinary.

She told me all of this in a low voice on the café terrace while I tried to keep my hands still. Then she told me why she said what she said, why she told me to put the photograph away, why she looked past me before she spoke.

The young woman at the corner table, alone with a book, had been sitting there when Delphine arrived. She had looked up when I crossed the terrace. She had looked at me the way a person looks at someone they recognize but cannot place, which is different from the way a stranger looks at you, and Delphine had seen it, and Delphine was asking me to be careful.

I did not turn around immediately. I stood with my back to the corner table and I breathed, which was the hardest thing I have ever done, and then I turned slowly as though I were looking for a seat.

She had dark hair now. Nine years is a long time. But she had her father’s jaw and her grandmother’s hands, and she was looking directly at me with an expression I cannot describe except to say it was the expression of someone who has been deciding something for a very long time and has just reached the end of the decision.

She did not run.

I did not speak first.

She closed her book and she said, in a voice I had not heard in nine years: “I thought you might find me eventually.”

What she told me in the hours that followed is hers and I will not put it here. What I will say is that she left at seventeen for reasons that were real and that she had carried alone, and that she had built a life, and that she was not lost in any of the ways I had feared in the dark for nine years.

We sat at that corner table until the café closed. My husband found us there. He sat down and said nothing for a long time, and then he reached across and held both our hands and that was enough.

She came home for four days the following month. We are learning what we are to each other now, carefully, at a pace she sets, which is the only pace that matters.

My mother’s cover-up is folded on Wren’s old bed. The crooked yellow sun is still there. Wren said she still likes it better ruined, and I understood, finally, that she was talking about more than a cover-up.

She said she likes it better because the sun was stitched over the damage, not instead of it. I think about that sentence more than I can say.
