Mr. Delgado laid the two signatures side by side, and I did not need his training to see it. My mother’s capital M ended in a long, curling tail, the same one that closed every Christmas card of my childhood. The one on the form was upright and careful, drawn slowly by someone copying a shape instead of living in it. He told me that Thursday that the company had already compared it against decades of exemplars, that the hospice charting matched my journal to the day, and that the claim was frozen and referred to their fraud unit. I stood in my mother’s empty front room listening, and the quiet felt like her hand on my shoulder.

Weeks later, Siobhan called at midnight, and I let it ring twice before answering. She cried the way she never had at the funeral. She admitted she had been drowning in credit card debt for years, that she had signed the form herself, and that she had convinced herself I would never look. I thought about the recliner, the pill organizer sorted by weekday, and the afternoon our mother called me by her dead sister’s name. I had held that grief alone while she called it drudgework. She begged me not to let it reach the police.

What decided it was something Mom said in a clear week during her first winter of illness. She took my wrist and asked me to look after Siobhan, because she was loud only when she was frightened. I had never told anyone, and I had nearly forgotten it. So I gave Mr. Delgado my full statement and every notebook, but I asked him to resolve it through the company instead of a courtroom. The insurer reversed the change, and the policy was divided evenly, eighteen thousand dollars each. Siobhan signed a written admission and repaid what she had borrowed against it.

We do not talk often, but she drove down in spring and sat beside me at our mother’s grave without saying a word. I left the notebooks in a box in my closet. I no longer need them to know what I was worth. I was never the maid. I was the daughter who stayed, and that is a kind of love no form can erase.
