Jenna arrived within the hour, and she did not ask me to be brave. She photographed my wrist and scalp, drove me to urgent care, and sat beside me while a nurse wrote down what I said in a flat, careful hand. At dawn I went home alone. Daniel unlocked the kitchen door so I could start cooking, and I did, though only one dish. A pot of plain chicken soup, nothing more. At noon, with twenty-six guests seated and Margaret glowing in the blouse I had paid for, I set it in front of her and said it was the only feast I owed anyone.

Then I pressed play. Daniel’s voice filled the room, steady and unmistakable, followed by Margaret’s laughter through the locked door. Nobody touched a fork. Her sister from Columbus went pale. Daniel reached for my phone, and a colleague of Jenna’s, standing quietly near the hallway, stepped between us. I did not raise my voice. I told them I was leaving, that the mortgage papers were with my attorney, and that the recording was already safe in three places. Margaret’s Earl Grey cooled untouched in its china cup.

It was her sister who finally told me why, in the driveway, trembling. Margaret had spent her twenties cooking for a wealthy family in Columbus, sleeping in a room off the kitchen, humiliated at every holiday table. She had never forgiven the girl she had been. When Daniel brought home a woman who worked, who earned, who could not be made small, Margaret saw her own past standing in the doorway, and she could not bear it. She had punished me for being what she was never allowed to become.

The divorce was quiet and quick. Daniel moved into his mother’s spare room, and the judge, after listening to the recording, did not need long. I sold the apartment within the year and rented a small place with a window over a garden. Margaret wrote once, three lines, with no excuses beyond the truth her sister had already told. I did not answer, but I did not burn the letter either. On a Sunday that autumn, I cooked for myself, one dish, slowly, and ate it by the window. I had mistaken patience for love for six years. Patience, I learned, is only love when it is chosen, and I finally chose myself.
