Walter did not repeat himself. He told the room, in an even voice, that he had retired as a captain and had spent his last sea tour commanding the air wing aboard the Truman. On the night of the arresting cable failure, he had stood on the bridge and watched a young sailor in a yellow shirt run toward a snapped line while everyone else ran away from it. She pulled a crewman clear, signaled a waved-off jet back into the air, and never raised her voice. He had signed the commendation himself. He had asked her name afterward, and her chief had answered with one word. Riptide.

Kayla apologized, though her voice came out thin and she did not quite lift her eyes. I did not rescue her from the silence, and I did not enjoy it either. My mother’s hand tightened on my arm again, and this time I moved it away gently. I told the table that I had never needed anyone to be impressed. I only wanted my work left alone. Chief Hutchins had once said you cannot fight the water, you can only be it, and I finally understood he had meant calm, not conquest.

Later, Walter found me near the coat rack and shook my hand without a speech. He said the nickname had been spoken on that bridge with more respect than any medal citation. Then he went back to his seat and asked Preston, quietly, whether he had known any of this about his bride’s family. Preston had not. He looked at Kayla for a long moment, and I saw something in his face begin to rearrange itself.

Kayla knocked on my hotel door near midnight, barefoot, her dress still on. She said she had been the loud one for so long she had forgotten how to be the kind one. We talked until the window grayed, about our father, about Mom’s endless peace, about the role each of us had been handed. Our mother joined us at dawn with coffee and no excuses. At the wedding, Kayla’s toast was short and true. She said her sister was the strongest person she knew, and this time nobody laughed.
