Officer Brennan read the screen aloud for the camera. The transfer was two dollars, sent from my account into my father’s own, with a memo that said, “Paid in full.” Nothing had been taken from Ramon Castillo. He had been given exactly what he asked for, plus a final entry in a ledger he never knew I kept. When the officer asked which funds were stolen, my father said I had meant it as an insult. Brennan answered evenly that an insult is not a felony, and that his camera had recorded the whole report. The neighbors stayed in their doorways. My father’s smirk was gone, and for the first time he looked like a man who had run out of audience.

The memo was never about the two dollars. I thought of my dress blues at the front of that venue in San Diego, and the four empty pews I smiled past. I thought of every transfer I had sent for Julian’s mistakes, each one labeled a family responsibility and never mentioned again. For sixteen years I had been told I was playing soldier by the man whose approval I still wanted. Paid in full was not spite. It was me, at last, closing an account I had been funding with my own hope.

The weeks that followed were orderly, which is how I prefer hard things. Officer Brennan took my statement, and my father was cited for filing a false report. Base security attached the Gate 2 incident to the plastic-bagged letter, and the judge granted the restraining order without raising his voice. Nobody on that lawn needed me to shout. Ramon’s reputation as a respected principal quietly thinned, the way a story does once the evidence is sitting in a folder. My mother called once, late at night, and said she was sorry she had not been braver. I told her I believed she was.

Ethan and I celebrated our first anniversary on the deck of a small rental near the water, his mother laughing at the head of the table. I wore the medals to my next ceremony because they were mine, and I stopped explaining them to anyone. Julian wrote me a short, unpolished letter that asked for nothing. I answered kindly and did not rush. I learned that love should never arrive as an invoice, and that peace is not what you win from people who hurt you. It is what remains when you stop paying them.
