The first document was the deed, recorded the week I bought the house, with only my parents’ names on it and a line stating that no one else held any right to occupy it. The second was a letter from my attorney, giving Tessa and Brandon until six o’clock Friday evening to leave, and confirming that every booking on the listing had been cancelled and refunded in full. Tessa read both twice. When Brandon came back in from the deck, she handed him the pages without a word. He looked down at the robe he was wearing, and for the first time he took it off and folded it over a chair.

I knelt beside Dad’s chair. I thought about the robe, bought after forty years of early shifts at the cannery and a rented kitchen where the heater never worked. He had raised us to believe that giving was the same as loving, and that saying no was a kind of failure. Tessa had learned the half that was convenient. I told him gently that the house was his and that he only had to say the word. He whispered, “Please leave,” and it was the strongest thing I had ever heard him say.

They were gone Friday before the deadline, the truck backing slowly off the lawn. At the door, Tessa stood with Poppy asleep on her shoulder and said she was ashamed, not of the listing, but of how easy it had been. I did not rescue her from it. I said I loved her, that I would not be sending money again, and that both things could be true. Mom sat at the table and cried the way people do when something finally lets go. Then we cleaned together, scraping mud from the entryway and brushing dog hair from the recliner.

By summer the deck was quiet again. Dad wears the robe every morning and watches the tide with his coffee, and Mom planted hydrangeas along the blue fence. In August, Tessa called and asked if she and the children could visit for lunch only. Dad said yes, and that they should leave before dinner. I laughed, and so did he. A gift is not finished until the people it was meant for feel free to keep it. That house was never just shingles and wood. It was where my parents could finally rest.
