The third person was my granddaughter. She climbed out of the back seat in her yellow raincoat, holding a paper plate covered in foil, and walked past her parents without being asked. “I saved you cake, Grandma,” she said at the door. “Mommy said you didn’t want to come, but I didn’t believe her.” I took the plate with both hands. Behind her, Russell stood in the wet gravel, holding a phone that kept showing him the same word. Declined. Priscilla’s coat was still spotless, but her face had finally lost its manners.

I let them in and set out the chipped cup for my granddaughter, because it was the one with the blue flowers she loved. Russell began to speak, then stopped, then began again. He said the dinner was Priscilla’s idea, and Priscilla said it was a misunderstanding, and neither sentence lasted. I did not raise my voice. I opened the folder marked RUSSELL and placed it on the table between us, forty years of tuition, premiums, dues, and quiet transfers. “I never kept this to hold it over you,” I said. “I kept it because I wanted to remember I was a mother before I was a bank.” My son looked at those pages as if he were seeing his own childhood itemized.

Priscilla left first, and I did not stop her. Russell stayed, and for a long while we sat with the rain and the cooling tea. He told me he had stopped hearing me years ago, that he had mistaken my help for weather, something that simply fell. I told him I had taught him that, and that I was sorry for my part. Then I told him the money would not be returning, but the door would stay open. Those were separate things, and I needed him to learn the difference. My granddaughter fell asleep against my arm, still wearing her raincoat.

In the spring, Russell sold the townhouse and rented a smaller place, and he paid his own electric bill with a trembling pride I recognized from Franklin. He came on Sundays and fixed my gutters without being asked. I wore the pearl earrings to his first dinner in the new kitchen, a plain meal on plain plates, and he set a place for me beside his own. I was invited, and I stayed until the dishes were done. At home that night, I put the folder in the drawer and closed it gently. It was only paper now. What I had given had never been the money, and at last he understood that.
