My mother called three days later from a number I didn’t recognize, and I let it ring twice before answering. Her voice was thin, stripped of its usual certainty. They were in a motel off the highway, she said, the one with the flickering sign, and my father was sitting on the edge of the bed holding his shattered phone as if it might explain itself. I did not hang up, and I did not gloat. I told her I was glad they had a roof tonight, and that I would not be fixing the rest. She stayed silent so long that I could hear an ice machine rattling somewhere behind her.

After we hung up, I carried my tea to the porch and looked at the clay pots lined along the railing. My aunt Marian had taught me to prune when I was nine, kneeling in the dirt beside the roses she loved more than most people. “Cut back what’s dying,” she used to say, “so the rest can bloom.” The week before the sale, I had dug up cuttings from the edges of the garden my father had torn apart, the few canes the putting green had missed. They were rooting now, small and stubborn. Selling the house had never been revenge. It was pruning, late and overdue, and I had been the last one to admit it.

The lawyer my father trusted wrote me a careful letter, confirming what I already knew. There had been no lease, no rent, and no claim. They were guests I had mistaken for family. A month later, my father appeared at the cottage gate on a gray morning, leaning on a cane he had never needed before. He did not ring or knock. He stood there until I came out. “I called you extra responsibility,” he said, and his voice cracked on the second word. “You were the only thing holding us up.” I told him I had heard every word of that call. I told him I did not hate him, but that distance had become the shape my love took.

They rented a small apartment across town, and my mother mailed me a pot of basil with no note, which I understood as an apology. My father began sending a little money each month, never enough, always on time. I did not rush to fix their lives. In spring, the first rose opened on my porch, pale pink and slightly crooked, exactly the way Marian’s used to. I sat beside it with my tea going cool and understood that I had not lost a home. I had finally moved into one.
