Walter explained it plainly. Eleven years earlier, Nana Josephine had placed the farmhouse and its land into a trust, naming me the sole beneficiary. My mother had been allowed to live there for as long as she kept it cared for, but she had never held the power to sell it. Every conversation with a realtor, every listing, every number on that paper meant nothing. The brass key, he said, opened a safe deposit box at the bank down the street, and he had waited eleven years to hand me its contents.

Inside the box were copies of the deed, a ledger in Nana’s careful handwriting, and a small envelope of tomato seeds, labeled with the year she had saved them. Her letter was short. She wrote that she had watched love in our house move toward whoever asked loudest, and that she did not want me to spend my life waiting for a chair. A house, she wrote, should belong to whoever will tend it. She asked me to be kind about it, but not to be small.

I drove back that evening and did not rehearse a speech. I set the trust papers on the kitchen table beside Colette’s coffee and let her read them twice. Dale studied the floor. Brynn’s phone, still propped against the sugar bowl, had stopped recording and sat dark. I told them the listing was void, that nobody needed to leave in forty-five days, and that I would not live under anyone’s deadline again. Then I said they could stay under a written agreement, with fair terms and respect as the first one.

My mother cried later, alone, and I let her. Dale found his own apartment in Spokane before spring. Brynn came to the garden one Saturday and asked to learn how the seeds worked, and we did not talk about the video. In April, the magnolia bloomed over the front steps. I sanded a worn patch of the pine floor with a borrowed sander and two cans of oil. When the first tomato ripened in July, I carried it inside, set it in the pale yellow kitchen, and finally understood that Nana had never been asking me to wait. She had been asking me to stay.
