She pressed a key into my palm, small and brass, the kind that opens a safety deposit box. My brother Desmond’s footsteps reached the top of the basement stairs and Coralie called up that she had just stopped by to check on things, that everything was fine, and after a long pause the footsteps retreated to the kitchen. We stood without speaking until we heard the back door close.

Under the false bottom of the freezer was a waterproof envelope. Inside were three things: the original deed to my mother’s house, a handwritten will dated fourteen months before she died, and a small notebook filled with figures in her handwriting. The will left the house to me. Not Desmond. Not split between us. To me alone, with a note in the margin that read: Rosalind will know what to do with it. My mother had never explained this to me while she was alive, and I had not known I was the one she chose.

Coralie had known for over a year. My mother had come to her in secret, without telling Desmond, because she had discovered that Desmond had been slowly taking money from her account since his business failed. Small amounts at first, then larger ones, using the debit card she had given him for grocery runs. The notebook documented every transaction she had tracked herself, dates and amounts, two years of a son quietly draining a widow’s savings while calling it helping. She had changed the will and hidden the deed because she was afraid of what he would do if he found out before she died, and she had trusted Coralie because Coralie was the one who drove her to the bank.

I took the envelope. I called a lawyer the following Monday. Desmond contested the will, which I had expected, and the notebook made the contest very short. He has not spoken to me since the settlement. Coralie filed for divorce the same month, which had been coming for longer than the freezer, and she told me later that keeping my mother’s secret had been the clearest thing she had done in years. The house is mine. I had the freezer donated to a family shelter, the false bottom removed, and the whole thing cleaned out. My mother hid a life’s worth of careful love in a twenty-dollar appliance, and she trusted the right person to keep it cold.
