I went to HR.

Not to report Coralie for the relationship, because workplace relationships between colleagues are not automatically a policy violation, and I knew that. I went to HR because I had six months of documented schedule changes that placed me in the office during evenings that, cross-referenced against Desmond’s travel records, corresponded precisely with their time together. I did not have to argue that it was deliberate. The timestamps argued it themselves.

I requested a formal review of my scheduling history under our company’s conflict-of-interest policy, which required supervisors to disclose personal relationships with subordinates. Coralie had not disclosed. That was the policy violation.

She was placed on administrative leave that afternoon while the review was conducted. I was temporarily reassigned to a different supervisor. I want to be honest that I did not feel triumphant walking out of that HR office. I felt tired in a way that had nothing to do with sleep.

Here is the part I have not told many people. Coralie and I had been friendly. Not friends, but the kind of workplace friendly that feels like something. She had remembered my birthday. She had asked about the wedding venue. I had shown her a photo of my dress. For four years I had sat across from a woman who was spending her weekends with my fiancé, and she had asked me if I was excited for my own wedding, and she had meant it as a cruelty or as a test or simply as the thing a person says when they have compartmentalized so completely that they no longer feel the weight of what they are doing.

The review concluded that there was a clear undisclosed conflict of interest. Coralie resigned before a decision was made.

Desmond called eleven times in the two weeks after he left. He sent a long message explaining that he had been unhappy and had not known how to say so, as though unhappiness licenses what he did. I read it once and did not reply.

The venue returned half the deposit because the owner had heard what happened, and because some people are decent. My mother’s dress still fits her. The invitations were recycled.

I work at the same company. Different supervisor, different floor. Some days I pass Coralie’s old office and think about the cream blazer, and the smile, and the question about the wedding, and I try to locate what I actually feel about her, separate from what she did. I have not finished that work yet.

The storm Desmond did not think about was not me shouting or posting or making a public scene. It was me, alone in our apartment at 9:30 on a Thursday night, deciding to be precise and documented and quiet, which is a kind of storm that does not announce itself, and which, by the time anyone realizes it has arrived, has already been going for hours.
