Most riders pass the black bristles along an escalator and never wonder why they are there. A common guess is that they wipe dirt off shoes. They do not. The brushes sit where the moving step meets the fixed side panel, and their job is to make people step back before clothing, laces, or bags drift into that gap.

Escalators are built with small clearances between parts that move and parts that stay still. Those gaps are engineered and guarded, but a loose shoelace, a scarf, a shopping bag, or the hem of a coat can still catch if it rides the edge. The bristles are not a hard wall. They are a tactile cue. When a shoe or a pant leg brushes them, the feeling is meant to push the rider toward the middle of the step, where the clearance is safer.

That cue matters most for children, who stand near the side to look down or hold a rail at the wrong height. It also matters for anyone carrying a bag that hangs past the step. A little dust may come off a sole by accident. Cleaning was never the design. The brushes do not seal the machine from debris either. They only warn a body that it has drifted too close.

The rest of the system is ordinary and easy to skip. Stand near the center. Hold the handrail when the rise is steep. Keep laces, scarves, and straps clear of the sides. The bristles look like a small housekeeping detail. They are one quiet piece of a larger set of precautions that keep a familiar machine from turning a loose edge into a caught one.
