“The deed has only my name on it, Megan,” I said, evenly. She told me her parents had already sold their home, and that Kevin had signed the contractor’s papers “for the family.” I asked the foreman for his permit. He had none, because the owner had never signed anything. He looked at the gutted kitchen, then at me, and quietly told his crew to pack up. The saws went silent one by one. Megan stood holding her iced coffee, finally understanding that a clipboard is not a title.

I spent the night in the one bedroom they had not touched, listening to the tide through bare studs. At dawn, fists hammered my door. Megan, Kevin, and her parents stood on the porch beside a loaded moving truck, their faces gray. Their sale had closed Friday, and they had nowhere to sleep. I did not shout. I thought of Thomas telling me wood punishes people who rush, and I understood the same was true of people.

“You cannot live here,” I said. “But I will not leave you in a driveway.” I called a friend who rented cottages in town, and by noon her parents had keys. Then I turned to Kevin and asked him a single question. “Where are my cabinets?” He went pale. We walked to the dumpster together and found most of the oak doors beneath the drywall, scratched but whole. He carried them out one by one, and I did not help.

That week Kevin sanded beside me on the porch, wordlessly at first, then with questions about the grain. Megan came on the fifth day and apologized, plainly and without excuses. The foreman mailed back the brass porch light he had taken for safekeeping. I hung it myself. By Sunday, the oak stood in the kitchen again, imperfect and mine, and the ocean did what it had always done for me. It made everything quieter.
