Rhonda’s smile held until she read the sign. I stepped out of my car in the green dress, Walter’s recipe card in my hand, and let her walk to me. She asked who had dared to cancel her party. I told her the card on file was mine, that nobody had asked me to pay for the evening, and that nobody had asked me to attend it either. She began talking about gifts and gratitude, but cars were filling the lot behind her and people were watching. I said, evenly, that the hall would refund what it could and she was welcome to settle the rest on her own card. Then I handed the manager my copy of the email.

Caleb arrived at 7:40, tie loosened, looking at the sign, then at me. I didn’t raise my voice. I told him Walter wrote this card the winter he taught me to cook, because I rushed everything, even grief, and he used to laugh and say slow was a kind of love. I told him Walter worked extra Saturdays for a year to afford that eighth birthday dinner, and that he stood behind a boy in a clip-on tie and said “Our boy,” because it was all he needed to say. I said I had never asked for the head of the table. I had only asked for a chair.

Rhonda left within the hour, taking her sister and her sequins with her. Guests drifted back to their cars, some embarrassed, some quietly relieved. Marlene, Walter’s old friend, stayed with a few others from the first list, the ones who actually knew Caleb. The kitchen had already prepared the short ribs, so the manager set one long, plain table, and no one objected. Megan stood by the door a while, then came and sat down without a word.

Caleb took the chair beside mine. He did not give a speech. He said he had been tired of conflict and had mistaken my patience for permission, and that he was sorry. I didn’t make it easy, and I didn’t make it cruel. I slid his birthday card across the table. He read it slowly, the way Walter taught us to do things. Later, after the plates were cleared, he lifted his glass and said, “To Dad.” I answered, “To our boy.” For the first time in seven years, the silence between us felt like rest.
