I left before sunrise, while Gregory slept. I had not decided that night. I had been deciding for six years, one removed group chat at a time. In my sister’s closet sat a folder with a signed lease, a consultation with a family lawyer, and savings from the bookkeeping I did after Daisy’s bedtime. He believed I had no door because he never looked at what I built behind him. On the kitchen table I left my ring and one line: “You may add me back to the chat. I will not be there.”

Before I carried Daisy to the car, I stopped at Oliver’s door. He was asleep, twelve years old, one hand clutching the blanket the way he did at seven, when I sat beside his bed until the crying stopped. I remembered the emergency room, the vending machine coffee, his small hot hand in mine. I slid a note under his pillow. “I loved you when no one asked me to. That was never your fault.” Then I closed the door softly and did not look back.

The aftermath was loud, though I stayed quiet through it. Gregory called forty times, then added me to the group chat from his phone, as if the problem were a missing name. I muted it and left. His mother called me ungrateful, and I let her finish. When the lawyer’s letter arrived, he finally understood how real it was. He was stunned that I had planned, and I was not surprised that he was stunned. We settled on shared custody, and Daisy learned that her father’s house and her mother’s house could be different places. On our first night in the new apartment, I set a platter of chicken drumsticks on the table. She ate three, then looked up and asked, “Can I?” I said, “Always.”

Months later, a message came on my phone, from Oliver, with no one watching. “I’m sorry I called you that. Can I see Daisy on Saturdays?” I wrote back, “Yes. Always.” Gregory said only that he had not seen it, which was true, and which I no longer needed to forgive on his schedule. That evening I sat on our small balcony while Daisy hummed over her dinner. The quiet felt different here. For the first time in six years, I was not proving that I belonged. I simply did.
