The door opened just as Vanessa asked her question again, and Caleb stepped into the dining room with his coat over his arm, calm as a man arriving exactly on time. I set down my water glass. That Wednesday in June, I had come home from Atlanta early and found Vanessa’s shoes by our bedroom door, Ethan’s laugh drifting out behind it. Twenty-six days before the wedding, I stood in my own hallway holding a garment bag, and I did not scream. I put the keys on the counter and left. Everything afterward, the cancelled venue, the returned gifts, the dress still hanging in my mother’s closet, I handled alone.

Vanessa’s glass hit the floor and shattered across the oak. She knew him. Caleb Hartwell had taken over as chief executive of the firm where she and Ethan both worked, three weeks earlier, and she had spent those weeks trying to be noticed by him. He had never shared his private life at work, and I had never asked him to. He crossed the room, kissed my forehead, and said only, “Sorry I’m late, love.” Then he nodded to my sister. “Vanessa. Good to see you outside the office.” Nothing more. He did not need to. Ethan went pale, and my mother’s mouth opened and closed like she was searching the chandelier for a defense.

My father set down his knife. For the first time in my life, he looked at Vanessa instead of around her. “I let this table decide things for too long,” he said, and the word peace, which he had used like a shield for years, sounded smaller. My mother stared at the tablecloth, remembering her own note, Family only, and finally understood how it read. Caleb pulled out the empty chair beside me and sat. He asked my father about retirement as though nothing had happened, and slowly, awkwardly, the room began to talk to me instead of through me.

We stayed an hour, not five minutes. Vanessa left before dessert. Ethan walked me to the porch and apologized, not well, but honestly, and I told him I forgave him because holding it had grown heavy. Driving home along the coast, I realized I had not come to win anything. I had come to be seen. Last week, my mother mailed my wedding dress, with a note: Take your time. Come when you are ready.
