Under a layer of kitchen bags sat my own black duffel, zipped halfway. I knew it before I touched it. Through the gap I could see the corner of my laptop, my grandmother’s jewelry roll, and the folder where we keep the passports. Everything that mattered most in our house had been packed neatly, as if someone had taken care not to scratch it. The lid had been left open an inch on purpose. I stood there with one hand on the cold plastic, and the quiet in the yard felt enormous. Then the side gate clicked, and I turned around.

A man I had never seen stood by the gate. Behind the kitchen window, Hannah was holding my son against her shoulder and slowly shaking her head at me. The driver, whose name I would learn was Marcus, had parked his truck across our driveway and was already on the phone with the police. The stranger looked from me to the truck and walked away fast, but not fast enough. He was Hannah’s ex, Travis, who had followed her for months and made her give him our door code, promising to leave her alone if she cooperated.

That night, at my kitchen table, Hannah told me everything. She had never planned to steal from us. She was too ashamed to say she was being threatened and too frightened to refuse, so she packed the bag slowly, hoping I would come home early, and left the lid open as the only signal she dared to give. Marcus, it turned out, had been trying to reach us for weeks. Every time he looked into that camera and moved his lips, he was asking whether anyone inside needed help, because he had seen the same man watching our house. Our broken microphone had swallowed every word.

Travis was charged within the week, and Hannah gave her statement with a steadiness I admired. I paid for a locksmith and a new camera, but I fixed the microphone first. She stayed with us, and my son still lights up when she comes through the door. In the spring I found Marcus on his route and handed him a coffee gift card taped to a piece of cardboard, written in marker. It said only, You saw us. Thank you. Some strangers are the only ones paying attention, and I hope I always read the writing they hold up.
