Gordon read the letter standing on my porch, and I watched the fury leave his face one line at a time. Winifred wrote that she had known about the $41 from the very first month, because the utility office had called to thank her for her prompt payment, and she had let me keep believing otherwise. She understood that I needed to be needed as much as she needed the help. She wrote that the missing $27,900 was never the wound. The wound was that her only son had stopped asking how she was. Preston read the will aloud afterward. The house went to Gordon, with the transfers counted as money he had already received, and the rest of her savings went to a scholarship at the local community college.

Gordon sat down on my porch step, a tall man suddenly folded small, and said nothing for a long while. Then he asked, in a voice I had not heard from him all morning, whether she had been frightened during the thunderstorms that last summer. I told him the truth. She had come to my kitchen table twice, in her robe, and we had played cards until the sky went quiet, and she had cheated both times. He laughed once, roughly, and then covered his eyes. I did not comfort him, and I did not turn him away. Some grief has to be sat beside, not fixed.

He repaid nothing that day, and I did not expect him to. But three weeks later, a cashier’s check arrived at the lawyer’s office for the full $27,900, with a short note that said only, I should have called on June 18 and stayed on the line. Preston forwarded it to the scholarship fund, as the will required. Gordon painted the blue shutters himself that autumn, badly, with streaks, and left the dish of peppermints beside the front door exactly where she had kept it.

Winifred left me one thing, a worn deck of cards with a corner folded on the queen of hearts. I keep it in my kitchen drawer. On stormy nights I shuffle it once and cheat a little, just to hear how quiet the house becomes. I think she meant it that way. Not as payment for the water bill, but as proof that she had known me, and that being known by someone for years is a kind of wealth no one can audit or take.
