After the door closed behind my parents and brother, nobody in the great room moved. Then Grandma Helen leaned her cane against her chair, asked Oliver which stocking he wanted, and the lodge began breathing again. Later, upstairs, I found out what the “capacity limit” really was. The corner room with the bunk beds, the one she had set aside for us weeks earlier, had my brother’s name taped over Oliver’s on the list my mother kept. The invitation had been mailed to me by Grandma herself. My mother had simply decided it would never reach me.

I sat on the edge of that bunk bed while Oliver slept and thought about the lanterns. Grandpa built the lodge by hand the year after they buried their first child, and he made Grandma promise that on Christmas Eve no one would ever arrive to a dark porch. She had kept that promise for forty-one winters. She told me quietly that she had watched my mother choose favorites for most of my life, and she had stayed silent, paying school fees and car repairs without comment, because she wanted to know whether it was habit or a decision. The door had answered her.

Around midnight we sat by the fire, and she did not gloat. She looked tired, and older than I had ever allowed myself to notice. “I did not want this to be how it ended,” she said. “But I would not be a woman worth your trust if I let it pass.” My phone buzzed all night with messages from my mother and brother, and I read each one, then set the phone face down. I was not angry. I was simply done carrying a door that only I was expected to hold open.

Spring brought a handwritten letter from my mother. It did not ask for the lodge or forgiveness, only admitted that she had been wrong, and I read it twice. I did not rush to answer, and Grandma did not tell me what to do. On the next Christmas Eve, I lit the lanterns myself. Oliver hung his stocking first, on the hook nearest the fire, and when the latch clicked behind us, it sounded like nothing more than a house closing against the cold.
