The note was taped under the wiper on a quiet Tuesday: “One car per house!” We had two vehicles, both registered, both parked in front of our own home the way we always had. No city rule limited us to one car. We tossed the paper, laughed about a cranky neighbor, and went to work. Three days later the engines outside woke us. A tow truck was lifting my car. A second was lining up for my husband’s. Across the street, the woman whose handwriting matched the note stood on her porch with her arms crossed and a satisfied smile.

I walked over before the anger could take the sentence. “Wow, you really did it,” I said. She asked what was funny. I held up my phone and showed her the registrations. Both cars belonged to my employer’s transportation service. The plates were commercial fleet tags, not ordinary household plates. A complaint had sent the trucks. The complaint had not checked the tags. Improper towing of company vehicles meant lost time, fees, and a claim the towing company would have to answer. I told her the legal team would take it from there.

The drivers stopped. They made their own calls. Within minutes both cars were lowered back onto the street. The smile on the porch was gone. She went inside without another word. That evening my employer confirmed the towing company had apologized and that no lawsuit was needed once the cars were returned. The street went quiet again.

She never left another note. The lesson was not a shouting match. It was the tags she had not bothered to read before she called the trucks. A complaint built on a marker and a guess can look like a win until the paperwork arrives. On our street, the win lasted about as long as it took the drivers to put the cars back down.
