“I’m going to say this once, because I’ll never say it sober,” Nora’s voice said, loose and laughing on that balcony. “Dalton’s money is part of why I’m marrying him. But the real reason I wanted out of that house is my brother.” On the screen she stared into her pink drink. “They never aimed it at me, so I let them aim it all at him. I watched it for twenty years and called myself the lucky one. He’s the best person I know, and I’m a coward.” The clip ended. The lights stayed dim, and nobody in that hall moved. I had expected to feel victorious. I felt tired, and strangely careful, like I was carrying something full to the brim.

Dalton stood first. He did not shout. He looked at Nora for a long moment, touched her shoulder, and said, “We are going to talk about all of it, tonight, together.” He stayed beside her, which was somehow harder for her than if he had left. My father cleared his throat twice and found nothing to say. My mother lowered the napkin from her mouth, and for the first time I could remember, she looked straight at me and did not look away.

Nora walked across the hall alone, past the head table, past every carefully placed seat, and lowered herself onto a tiny chair at table 19, between the boy with the dinner roll fortress and a girl holding a purple crayon. “I should have said it years ago,” she whispered. “Not on a balcony. Not to a camera.” I told her I had not put it on the projector to punish her. I put it there because I was tired of being the only one who remembered. The little boy slid a crayon drawing toward me without a word. It was a robot, badly colored, with a cardboard body and an enormous smile.

My parents found me by my car much later. Mom spoke first, her voice unsteady. She said she had watched it all and chosen silence every time, and that silence was a decision, not an absence. Dad only said, “I did not know the footage made it that plain.” It was not an apology, but it was the first honest sentence he had ever offered me. I did not forgive them that night. I folded the robot drawing into my jacket and drove home with the windows down. Some doors open in one evening. Others open an inch a year, and I decided I could wait.
