“I never got to meet you, so forgive me for talking to a ceiling,” my wife said. “Do not let him tell you he is fine. He says it fast, like his father, so nobody looks closer. Make him iron his own shirts. I taught him, and he will pretend he forgot.” A soft laugh moved through the ballroom, wet and grateful. “So I am asking you to take my place for one song. Not to replace me. To finish what I started.” My son took his bride’s hand without a word, and a melody I had not heard in nine years began to play.

She used to hum that song over the sink the winter she got her news, and I had never told our boy. I watched them move across the floor, his jaw finally loose, his forehead against hers. Near the end her voice came back once more. “Tell my boy his mother is not afraid, and that she is proud of the shirt.” He had ironed it himself that morning. I knew because years ago he had asked me how she folded the cuffs.

When the song ended, nobody clapped. People just stood there, the way they do in church after a prayer. My second wife stood at the edge of the floor with her hands wrapped around her elbows. She did not look angry. She looked like someone who had carried a stone a long time and had just been told she could set it down. I took the cassette from the DJ, turned it over, and read the label on Side B again. FOR HER.

I played it that night in the garage, on my old recorder, with my second wife beside me on an overturned bucket. “If you are hearing this, you are the woman who stayed,” my first wife said. “I never knew your name, but I knew someone would have to love my boy through the hard years. I am grateful, and you were never in my way.” My wife wept without a sound. Then she took my hand, and we sat until the tape ran out. The next morning she asked me to frame the pie crust recipe, and she hung it in our kitchen herself.
