The total was nine thousand four hundred and eleven dollars.

That is what I had spent on my parents’ grocery account across eighteen months, believing I was helping with basics, milk and bread and electricity and the dignified necessities of two people living on a fixed income.

Here is what it actually bought. The ribeyes and crab legs were not a one-time splurge. They appeared regularly. So did Desmond’s protein powder, new flavors every rotation, and a running order of energy drinks that suggested he was fueling something other than a job search. There were also orders for a video game controller, a Bluetooth speaker listed under electronics, and, in month fourteen, a delivery from a specialty bakery I had never heard of that cost sixty-three dollars.

The line item that put me on the floor was from month seven. Under the delivery notes, my mother had written a gift message to be included with the order. It read: Happy birthday Desmond, love Mom and your sister.

My name.

She had used my money to give my brother a birthday present and signed it from both of us without telling me.

I sat on the kitchen floor for a long time.

I did not call in anger. I want to be honest about why. I was afraid that if I called angry, she would cry, and I would absorb it, and in a week we would be back to where we started. So I waited two days, until I was not angry anymore. I was just finished.

I removed the grocery account entirely. I cancelled the connected card. I called the school, paid Wren’s lunch balance forward for a full semester, and set up an automatic direct payment that bypassed my mother completely.

Then I called and told her what I had found, plainly, without crying or raising my voice. She said I was exaggerating. She said Desmond was struggling. She said I had always had more than him, even as a child, which is a sentence I have turned over many times since.

Desmond has not called. I did not expect him to. My mother calls on Sundays, the same day I used to send the transfer, and I let most of them go to voicemail, and I call back on my own schedule, and the calls are short.

Wren has a full lunch account. I check the balance every Friday. She eats with Priya, who used to give her half a sandwich, and last month Wren asked if she could share her lunch back, because that is who my daughter is.

She has never asked about the crackers. I think she has decided to leave it where it belongs, which is in the past, which is also, I am learning slowly, where some other things belong too.
