The address was the lake house.

Everett’s letter ended by telling me to go there. To stop making room in other people’s houses and live, finally, in the one place that had always been fully ours. He wrote that he had spent his career recording lines other men wished away, and that the one line he could not bear to leave unrecorded was the one around his own wife. The change-of-address card I sent Wesley did not announce a war. It simply told him where his mother now lived, in the house he had been calling his.

I moved in the spring. Marren Lake in April is cold and gray and mine.

Wesley did not take it well. He called it spiteful. He said I was punishing him over $748 and some dock boards, that I was being manipulated by a grieving old man’s letter, that I was clearly not thinking clearly, and I heard, underneath every word, the exact thing Everett had feared. Not theft. Something quieter. My son had decided somewhere along the way that my getting older was the same as my getting incompetent, and that my things were simply his things, early.

Here is what I learned that he never meant me to. The $268 in dock boards was not the whole of it. Bertram found more once he looked. Wesley had already spoken to a realtor about the lake house valuation. He had already, in his head, sold it. The graduation hotel bill was not cruelty for its own sake. It was a test, the way people test a fence, to see how much weight it would bear before it fell over. I paid nothing and moved onto the land instead, and the fence held.

We are not estranged, exactly. He calls. But there is a coolness now that I did not put there, and I have stopped apologizing for it.

Silas came up to the lake in June, alone, seventeen and awkward. He told me he was sorry about the hotel, that he had wanted me at the front of the ceremony and been overruled. Then he asked if he could learn to fix the dock the way his grandfather did. I said yes. He is terrible at it. I let him keep trying.

The house will be his one day, and Juniper’s, protected from the hands that tried to take it early. Everett recorded that line eighteen months before he died, and I finally, at seventy-six, stopped treating my own life as a wish.
